WoW Forever will offer alpha gamepad controls when it launches on PC on November 4, 2026, according to Xbox Wire. The feature lets players explore Azeroth with a controller, while some uses remain outside official support.

Xbox Wire editor Mike Nelson tested the controls during the beta. He described using them on a desktop PC and a living-room setup, with a keyboard still useful for talking to other players.

How WoW Forever gamepad controls work

Nelson says players can enable Gamepad (Alpha) in Options. The interface then shows controller button icons. Triggers and bumpers switch between sets of actions mapped to the buttons, giving access to spells and other skills.

He also describes a ping system, opened by holding the right analog stick, for short party commands. However, he found a keyboard or voice chat more practical for communication.

Handheld play has a support caveat

Nelson ran the game on an ASUS ROG Xbox Ally through Windows and Battle.net. But he says that setup is not officially supported. His account describes a workaround tested during beta, not a guarantee for every handheld.

He used the touchscreen and onscreen keyboard to reach the gamepad setting. He then adjusted the interface to leave more room for the game world on the smaller screen.

A separate home alongside modern and Classic WoW

Blizzard describes Forever as a permanent version alongside modern and Classic World of Warcraft. Players return to the original continents and advance to level 60, with new stories and areas rather than a simple replay of the old game.

According to Blizzard, access to WoW Forever comes with a World of Warcraft subscription or game time. An extra upgrade is therefore optional for the base experience. However, the new Skyborne race and its Zephras Isle starting story require the Skyborne Heroic Pack or a higher edition.

Blizzard lists cosmetics and other benefits in those optional packs. The distinction matters for players returning with an existing subscription: access to Forever does not include every extra sold alongside it.

Blizzard schedules the global launch for November 4 at 11 p.m. GMT. That is midnight on November 5 in Central Europe.
