Hong Kong’s High Court gave Joshua Wong a 10-year jail term on November 5, 2026, Human Rights Watch said. The democracy activist’s case falls under the national security law Beijing imposed in 2020.

Amnesty International said the sentence punishes dissent. Its deputy regional director, Sarah Brooks, said it extends the state’s persecution of Wong. She also urged governments not to accept the jailing of peaceful activists as normal.

Joshua Wong faces prison until late 2036

Wong, 30, has been in custody since November 2020, Human Rights Watch said. Two months of the new term will overlap with his current sentence, Reuters reported. He now faces jail until late 2036.

Amnesty said his earlier sentence was due to end in January 2027. He received that four-year, eight-month term in 2024. The case concerned his role in an unofficial democratic primary in 2020.

Joshua Wong pleaded guilty in September, Reuters reported. Amnesty described the charge as conspiring to collude with foreign forces. Prosecutors said he sought foreign sanctions or other hostile measures against Hong Kong and China. They said he worked with activist Nathan Law and others between July and November 2020.

Rights groups challenge the use of security laws

Human Rights Watch said much of the case rested on Wong’s foreign lobbying and media work before the law took effect. However, officials also cited later posts and reposts. The group said they used these to argue that the alleged plot continued.

The group said officials appear to pile new charges onto leading activists to keep them jailed. Meanwhile, Amnesty urged Hong Kong to overturn Wong’s national security convictions. It also called for the repeal of laws that breach the city’s human rights duties.

A joint statement from Freedom House linked his jail terms to Beijing’s erosion of basic freedoms. The Human Rights Foundation, Hong Kong Watch and ARTICLE 19 also signed it. The groups called for his release at once, with no conditions.

From student protests to years in custody

Reuters traced Wong’s activism to his teens, when he helped found the student group Scholarism. He later became a global face of the 2014 Umbrella Movement. In his plea for a lighter term, Wong said he had never advocated Hong Kong independence or China’s collapse, Reuters reported.

The Associated Press reported that the United States condemned the sentence and called for Wong’s release. Britain’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office also criticized the case. It said the law targets people for political speech and taking part in politics.

But Hong Kong’s Legislative Council defended the sentence in an official statement. Its spokesperson said the court acted on evidence and law, not political views. The council also rejected foreign criticism as interference.

Calls to free Joshua Wong

The Freedom House statement asks democratic governments to press harder for Wong’s release. It urges the White House and State Department to raise his case when Donald Trump next meets Xi Jinping.
