Trump Says Microsoft Is Negotiating TikTok Purchase
In a surprising revelation, former US President Donald Trump has claimed that Microsoft is in discussions to acquire TikTok, the popular short-video platform owned by China’s ByteDance.
According to Trump, Microsoft is engaged in negotiations to purchase TikTok’s US operations, aiming to resolve concerns over data privacy and national security. However, neither Microsoft nor ByteDance have officially confirmed these talks.
Why Microsoft Wants TikTok
This alleged acquisition attempt mirrors the 2020 deal that was blocked by the Trump administration. The renewed talks could have major implications for the tech industry:
- Data Privacy & Security – US lawmakers worry about TikTok’s data collection and possible ties to the Chinese government. A Microsoft acquisition might ease these concerns.
- Geopolitical Tensions – A renewed deal could increase friction between the US and China, especially amid ongoing trade disputes.
- Microsoft’s Expansion – Acquiring TikTok would boost Microsoft’s presence in social media, competing with platforms like YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels.
A Repeat of the 2020 TikTok Ban?
The situation is reminiscent of Trump’s 2020 executive order attempting to ban TikTok in the US. Back then, Microsoft was among the companies interested in acquiring TikTok, but the deal never materialized. Instead, ByteDance negotiated with Oracle and Walmart, but the agreement stalled due to legal challenges.
The Biden administration has also expressed concerns over TikTok’s data security. In March 2023, the White House supported a bill that could ban TikTok if ByteDance refused to sell its US operations.
Given the past regulatory struggles, a new deal between Microsoft and TikTok would likely face intense legal and political scrutiny.
No Official Confirmation from Microsoft or ByteDance
Despite Trump’s claims, Microsoft has not issued an official statement regarding the alleged negotiations. Similarly, ByteDance has not commented on the speculation.
