Anthropic has added guidance intended to limit Claude game cloning in Claude Code on Opus 5.5, Game Developer reported on October 30, 2026. The company pointed the outlet to technical staff member Addy Osmani’s statement confirming the new guidance.

Osmani said the new guidance tells the tool not to recreate a specific game that someone else owns. He linked it to Anthropic’s rule against using its tools to infringe intellectual property rights.

What the Claude game cloning guidance covers

According to Game Developer, the rule separates copies of specific games from original projects. Simply giving a copy a new name does not avoid the restriction.

However, Osmani said users should still be able to build games with their own designs and assets. The same applies to original games within a genre. His statement therefore leaves room to make new games with the tool.
