OpenAI announced new teen safety measures for ChatGPT on October 30, 2026, adding restrictions on weapons-related information. The company also committed to publishing a Community Safety Report on violence prevention and other risks.
OpenAI says the first report will cover the second half of 2026 and appear in early 2027. It plans further reports every six months, including relevant data, anonymized examples and information about changes to its safeguards.
OpenAI teen safety limits cover more requests
The company says users under 18 will face additional limits on practical information about weapons and security systems. Those limits would apply even when a question does not show violent intent, while allowing support for prevention and de-escalation.
OpenAI also says stricter limits on detailed reconstructions of past mass attacks will apply to all users. It is developing interventions that could end chats involving fixation on violence and temporarily pause accounts after repeated incidents.
The existing teen experience
OpenAI’s separate description of ChatGPT for Teens says safeguards are enabled by default for users under 18. They cover areas including self-harm, eating disorders, violence, dangerous activities and explicit content, while preserving educational uses of the service.
According to that product description, parents with linked accounts can set Quiet Hours and manage selected settings. Notifications are limited to certain high-risk situations, where the company says support outside the chat may be important.
The teen product also includes break reminders and cues identifying ChatGPT as artificial intelligence, OpenAI says. Its stated behavior rules prohibit encouraging emotional dependence or implying that the system has feelings or consciousness.
OpenAI describes Study Mode as using questions and guided steps to help students understand material. Its teen experience also offers quizzes and Study Hours, during which students or parents can make that mode the default.
Rollout and reporting are still ahead
OpenAI says the newly announced safeguards will begin rolling out in the weeks following October 30. The planned Community Safety Report is a future publication, rather than an assessment of effectiveness released with this announcement.
